Weather Tracking in Agriculture Technology

Updated: Aug 25, 2021

What is Weather Tracking

Weather radar is used to track weathers by detecting precipitations. The radar collects data on the strength of return beam and the time it takes to return to see how heavy the precipitation is. The resulting data is displayed on a map with color blue, dark red and purple to indicate which area has heavier precipitation.

Weather tracking can also predict the velocity of precipitation using doppler effect. It detects how fast precipitation is moving in a certain direction. This can give viewers a general idea of where the tornado and severe thunderstorm are going to occur.

Weather Tracking in Agriculture

The weather tracking monitor used in agriculture usually consists in two core technologies. The first technology is a network of sensors that capture data about the weather through the weather tracking station. The second one is a computer system used for extracting data to warn farmers against potentially harmful weather forecasts.

The technology brings huge benefits for the farmers. It significantly reduces the risks that farmers must face when meteorological uncertainty occurs. Additionally, farmers can make better predictions of crop needs to prevent them from over or underwatering.

Industry Opportunities

It is impossible for farmers to fight the weather; hence it would be better to adapt to different situations. Nowadays, we can use technology to predict the weather as accurately as possible. Considering weather as the most important factor that affects farm production, farmers must be aware of many weather conditions including precipitation and humidity. There are also possibilities of extreme weathers such as drought and flood which can create severe losses for the farmers. Therefore, weather monitoring pretty much determines a farmer’s success, and it is the reason why weather monitoring device is becoming more and more popular. It is certainly an industry that has hidden opportunities for many agricultures technology manufacturer to enter the market and make profit.

Industry Challenges

In some areas, especially more rural areas, there are lacks of mobile phones and internet connection. The efficiency of the weather tracking station decreases since it cannot accurately forecast the weather. However, it is reported that this is becoming less and less an issue as there are more options for farmers for connectivity, including development of more network weather station and a wider area of network.

Summary

  • Weather is the most important factor in farming

  • Farmers use weather tracking devices to forecast weather and make smart decisions to reduce risk

  • Although weather forecasting technology brings a lot of benefits, it also faces challenges of internet coverages.
